When suitability can’t help you scale

Mind Your Character (Bosede Olusola-Obasa)

In today’s marketplace, many professionals are suitable. Fewer are preferred. There comes a point in your business or career when you need to answer the question of preferability.

Being suitable means you meet the requirements. You have the degree, the experience, the technical competence. You can do the job. In most mid-level and senior roles, that is the baseline. It gets you considered.

But being preferred is different. It means that when decision-makers compare capable options, your name rises naturally to the top.

Research published in the Harvard Business Review suggests that as roles become more senior, emotional intelligence and relational competence account for a significant portion of leadership effectiveness—sometimes more than technical expertise. LinkedIn’s Global Talent Trends reports consistently show that soft skills such as communication, adaptability, and collaboration are among the most in-demand attributes worldwide.

At senior levels, opportunities are rarely awarded on competence alone. They are entrusted to those who combine competence with confidence-inspiring presence.

So what moves you from suitable to preferable?

Clarity of value. Can you articulate the specific outcomes you create?

Credibility. Do you have a track record that reduces perceived risk?

Character. Are you trusted when pressure rises?

Strategic visibility. Do the right people know what you stand for and what you deliver?

Emotional intelligence. Can you read rooms, manage tensions, and build alignment?

Initiative. Do you wait for instructions, or do you anticipate and act?

At senior levels, opportunities are rarely awarded on competence alone. They are entrusted to those who combine competence with confidence-inspiring presence.

Here is the honest question: If ten professionals with similar résumés were lined up, what would make you the obvious choice?

Suitability opens the door. Preferability earns the key.
