What I tell girls about being a strong woman

Mind Your Character (Bosede Olusola-Obasa)

I consider Ziad K. Abdelnour’s admonition to the female gender to be very balanced. He said, “Be strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when you need help, and brave enough to ask for it.” There’s no better time to boldly re-echo this counsel to be a strong woman to every 21st Century girl like this month that marked the International Day of the Girl Child.

Someone has aptly described being a strong woman as a woman who “believes deeply in the power of her existence and the positive impact she can make on the world.”

That’s why I tell girls that the idea of a strong woman has been a reality for centuries, and it’s here to stay! It is far from any individual’s myopic perspective. It has driven impressive results that complete the world, rather than complicate it!

I tell girls that the ‘strong woman’ ideology is a narrative to encourage women (especially girls) to be more intentional about building the mental and emotional strength or qualities needed to complete the world and not necessarily to compete with the male gender!

I tell girls that a strong woman doesn’t have to feel, look or act masculine to make her marks? Rather, she masters deploying her unique first-nature traits to achieve her goals.

I tell girls that they do have and should utilise some first nature advantages such as: Nurturance, Sensitivity, Sweetness, Supportiveness, Gentleness, Warmth, Cooperation, Expressiveness, Modesty, Humility, Empathy, Affectionate, Tenderness, Emotional, Kind, Helpful, Devoted, Understanding, Resourceful, etc.

I tell girls that strength in women takes many forms; and the blend of each one’s qualities may differ from one woman to another. She however needs to be a purposeful strong woman who cultivates and develops her potential.

I tell girls that being strong isn’t just about surviving, it’s about becoming. It’s about nurturing a clear vision, because no one eventually gets anywhere who wasn’t really going somewhere. A strong woman never stops working on herself because “who to be” always precedes “what to do”.
