Do you belong to this WhatsApp group, as it’s said in street parlance? I have invested the past one decade of my life training and consulting on the importance of being personally responsible for one’s character. Yet, daily, so many adults fail simple tests of public character. Otherwise, what is this latest trend of air passengers causing disruptions at airport. The fact is, more often than not, outbursts are proofs of weak traits not worked upon.
It reminds me of unintentional minds who say, ‘whatever will be, will be’, forgetting that there’s a place for taking personal responsibility. It’s the same case with people who believe that what becomes of their character is in God’s hands.
Today, let’s hit the mindset reset button. Any poor character trait that you condone long enough in your secret will eventually expose you in the public. Among the errors that keep adults stuck at this juncture is refusing to pay attention to their personal weakness, instead, leaving it at God’s doorstep.
While I’m not here to dispute God’s supremacy, I want to shine a light on something important—your personal responsibility in shaping who you are becoming. If you didn’t know before, you better know now: ‘your character is your making. It is not in God’s hands; he actually put it in your hand as a personal responsibility.’

What you are expected to do is to develop it, build it, groom it to match the kind of life you want to own. So, if you left it in God’s hands, go and collect it and get down to work. In fact, this is one area where I agree with the saying, “heaven helps those who help themselves.” You make the choice, initiate commitment; God empowers you with grace to follow through, and that’s if you ask him.
And, in case you want to play the other cards of, ‘nobody can be better than the family, community, environment or society he lives in’, then I have a similar answer for you – ‘You are the architect of your destiny’.
However, if you are ready to start, here’s the way to go:
*The first step in character development is to make a deliberate choice for it.
*Next is to sign up to the various demands, which includes a sincere self-assessment to identify areas requiring keen attention.
If you didn’t know before, you better know now: ‘your character is your making. It is not in God’s hands; he actually put it in your hand as a personal responsibility.’
*Next is to realise that the race is for life! You can’t stop once you choose to be a person of sound character. There are actually no graduates of this life course.
*Next is to know that you may sometimes be a lone voice in standing for something right.
*It’s important to flaunt your status as a person that is committed to continuous personal character development. It helps people know what not to offer or expect from you.
*Next is to keep protecting your reputation by building a personal character bulwark… realising that tests of character are real and they make no announcements to come to you. In fact, the higher you go, the greater the stakes get.
*Keep learning to understand the journey you have undertaken better. Connect with people of the same interests, as a source of personal refreshment, strength and motivation.
*Then ensure that you remain inspired by the stories/history of people who excelled at it, the way you desire to. If anyone could do it at all, then anyone else can do it again! Your faith should never make God responsible for what you should do. When it comes to character, know this: society expects more from you if you profess any faith.
As an astute character development trainer with a track record of growth and supporting others to grow beyond their character vulnerabilities for the past 10 years, I believe that building to last is the only true reward for building at all.
