December is here! Can you perceive the breath of freshness? I am so grateful that you and I have the privilege of being alive in the 12th month of 2025. Amid prayers and strategies to ensure peaceful coexistence in the nation, you must have noticed an avalanche of sales openings and offers, online and around town, especially in Lagos where I currently live.
Permit me to remind you about the need to celebrate responsibly. Let me take the liberty of explaining the word ‘responsibly’ to mean the proper manner, style, way, or how a thing is done by someone. More specifically, an Online Dico defines it as: “To do something in a sensible or trustworthy manner.”
To act responsibly, you must show an understanding of your duties and your responsibility to behave decently, being mindful of others in your environment.
December is a season known for holidaying, vacationing, celebrating, and partying. I agree that despite all the downtimes, there’s so much to be grateful for in 2025.
However, while we are at it, let’s ensure it’s done sensibly, not foolishly or constituting nuisance. So, in this piece, I help you put context to responsible celebrations and I trust you would find it useful. So now, let’s get on it:
- Drive Responsibly: Be mindful of other road users. Observe all highway codes and safety regulations. Stay alive for more celebrations with your family and friends by driving responsibly. Don’t drink and drive.
- Party With Sense: Don’t lose it to that momentary feeling of ‘highness’. Don’t take over city driveways arbitrarily just to party, rather, patronise event centres or other fun/leisure spots. And what about the sound output from your car, indoor, or outdoor speakers? Hey! Don’t run others crazy with your happiness vibes, otherwise, it may be short-circuited! Make more friends with your fun actions, not enemies.
- Shop Responsibly: It’s a season of massive sales offers and discounts. However, you must understand your consumption limit and be decent enough to put a cap to your spending once you hit your limits. Greed and lack of contentment can throw you off balance. Avoid any public embarrassment in your adult life — Mind Your Character! Besides, you should not make January feel longer for you and yours.
- Don’t try to impress those who don’t mind you getting depressed! Don’t spend the money you don’t have trying to feel belonged. Live, eat, wear, drive, and look according to your pocket size. Be wise.
- Be Vigilant (Security Conscious): Avoid honouring invitations to hang out with strangers. Scrutinise your outings carefully. Don’t release your underage children to an “emergency child minder’’ just so you can feel free and fully catch your fun at an event. Be vigilant.
I’ll stop here but this isn’t exhaustive. You may consider other areas or scenarios and please act circumspectly. I wish you a tremendously fun holiday in advance. God has been faithful; so you be grateful by celebrating responsibly.
