The Akwa Ibom State government has reversed itself on the decision to deny President Muhammadu Buhari the use of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium for his rally.

The rally kicks off in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital on Friday.

Akwa Ibom State government had declared that the stadium would not be available for the rally in order to preserve the pitch for matches scheduled for January.

But in a swift reaction on Monday, the government said Julius Berger, the company handling the maintenance of the stadium had recalled its staff who had gone on Christmas/New Year break in order to make the stadium available for the rally.

The decision was made known on Monday in Uyo by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Monday Uko.

“Following a decision by Julius Berger Plc to recall their staff from their scheduled holiday, the Akwa Ibom Government approved the use of the Nest of Champions Stadium, Uyo for President Muhammadu Buhari’s rally on December 28,” the commissioner said.

While he said that the government expected the organisers of the rally to meet the management of the stadium to perfect the arrangement, he stressed that the terms set out by the government for the use of the facility would have to be strictly adhered to.

Announcing that the president’s rally would be flagged off on Friday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Ita Enang, said the president could not have been denied the use of the facility.

“It is public facility, a collective heritage of the Akwa Ibom people, Buhari is the President of Nigeria and nobody can restraint him from the use of certain facility anywhere in the country.

“The president has been fair and kind to Akwa Ibom people,” he said.

He said the president along with the national chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, governorship candidates, sitting governors and others would storm Akwa Ibom for the rally.
