Following the flagrant abuse of pesticides, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has warned Nigerians against the use of pesticides and other agro chemicals in homes for domestic purposes.

The warning, NAFDAC said, became necessary in view of the health dangers of the chemicals sold to members of the public.

The warning was given on Tuesday by the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye.

Represented by the Head, Veterinary and Agro Allied Department, Malam Bukar Usman, Adeyeye spoke at a sensitisation workshop held in Kano.

The workshop was organised for agro dealers.

Her words:  “The agency understands that the pressing need to produce more food is a major concern for farmers, companies and government, yet there is need to pay attention to fake agrochemicals.

“The neglect of good manufacturing practices or good warehouse practice, both accidental and deliberate, derives the circulation of substandard crop protection products.”

While disclosing that there had been increasing complaints about the abuse and misuse of pesticides in the country and the accompanying health hazards, NAFDAC boss, said the sensitisation effort was to save the country from becoming a dumping ground for substandard and fake agro allied chemicals.
