…promise fresh era for Nigerian cinema
Marking a historic milestone in Nigerian cinema’s evolution, the Film and Media Development Initiative, FMDI, has officially announced its grand rollout alongside the launch of its digital gateway, filmdi.org.
Founded by a group of distinguished filmmakers, broadcasters, and communication experts who shared a classroom over four decades ago, the newly established non-governmental organisation is stepping into the spotlight to drive professional collaboration, capacity building, and institutional reform across Nigeria’s creative ecosystem.
FMDI’s roots trace back to the early 1980s at the Universal College of Movies (later the Nigerian College of Film Technology) in Owo, Ondo State.
Reconnecting under the guidance of their former film production lecturer, Kayode Egbeleye, the industry veterans are pooling decades of collective experience in cinematography, strategic communication, brand marketing, and literary leadership to support the next generation of creative talent.
The unveiling of filmdi.org serves as the primary digital anchor for the initiative, establishing a critical modern infrastructure for an industry navigating massive technological shifts.
To create immediate, actionable opportunities for collaboration, the newly launched website features an interactive member registration portal and a dedicated mentorship sign-up sheet, allowing emerging filmmakers to connect directly with seasoned industry pioneers.
While the digital hub is now live for global registrations, the organisation will commemorate this milestone with a prestigious physical launch event at a popular premium hotel in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, in January 2027.
“The launch of filmdi.org is not just about putting up a website; it is about establishing a permanent, accessible bridge between Nigerian film industry’s rich history and its digital future,” said Mr Dele Dina, Executive Director of FMDI.
“The future of Nigerian cinema depends on our ability to adapt, collaborate, and innovate. Our mission is to ensure that the invaluable institutional memory and hard-won experience of our veterans become the bedrock upon which younger practitioners build a global, sustainable industry. This digital gateway, along with our upcoming physical launch in Osogbo in January, is our first major step in turning legacy into actionable progress.”
With its name officially approved by the Corporate Affairs Commission, FMDI is utilising the website launch to open doors for strategic partnerships with educational institutions, government agencies, private-sector organizations, and global stakeholders.
Prospective partners, creative professionals, and the public can now visit the platform to sign up for membership, register for the mentorship track, and learn more details about the upcoming January 2027 physical launch.
