…as WOMA turns spotlight on the people behind Afrobeats
The Wale Olomu Memorial Awards and Roundtable, WOMA-R, will return this December for another celebration of the people, stories and creative forces that have helped shape Nigerian entertainment.
The announcement was made on Friday in a statement by the coordinator of the event, veteran journalist, Mr. Femi Akintunde-Johnson, FAJ.
The 2026 edition, he said, would hold on two Saturdays – December 12 for the Roundtable and December 19 for the Awards.
This year’s broad theme is “Celebrating the People Behind the Glory”, while the Roundtable will tackle a question increasingly relevant to Nigeria’s global music success: “Afrobeats Is Bigger Than Ever – But Are the People Behind the Music Getting Their Fair Share?”
The 90-minute Roundtable, hosted on “The Vintage Talkshow” on TopRadio 90.9 FM, will bring together experienced voices from different sides of the music business to examine the often-overlooked people and processes behind successful Nigerian music – including producers, songwriters, managers and other creative professionals.
The conversation will explore ownership, royalties, publishing, contracts and the changing economics of an industry whose international profile has never been bigger.
The Awards, held in memory of the late Wale Olomu, the highly regarded entertainment journalist and editor, will continue WOMA’s distinctive tradition of recognising living practitioners whose contributions may not always receive the public attention they deserve.
The initiative takes its cue from Olomu’s own reportorial philosophy: to seek out, appreciate and promote people whose work and accomplishments might otherwise remain overlooked.
Now in its fourth edition, WOMA has honoured notable figures across different generations and areas of Nigerian entertainment, with its Special Recognition and Lifetime Achievement categories deliberately extending beyond the most visible stars to include the professionals and creative hands who have helped build the industry.
This year’s programme will again combine live radio, digital participation and the intimate, conversational character that has distinguished the WOMA Roundtable and Awards since its inception.
This year’s events are supported by Dayo Olomu Foundation and Angel of Hope.
