Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad has been sworn in as the new Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN.

The swearing in was conducted by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

It would be recalled that Buhari’s nomination of  Muhammad was approved by the Senate on July 17, 2019.

The President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, announced the approval of Muhammad at the plenary shortly after he was screened.

President Muhammadu Buhari sent a letter to the National Assembly, seeking the confirmation of Justice Tanko Mohammad as the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN.

Muhammad, the new CJN had been operating in acting capacity since January when Justice Walter Onnoghen was suspended before he eventually retired.

The letter from the president for approval was read at the plenary by Lawan.

The request, the president stated in the letter, was in accordance with Section 231 (1) of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

The president also referred to the section of the constitution which empowers the National Judicial Council, NJC, to have made such recommendation.

Present at the swearing in, among others, were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila and Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege.
