President Muhammadu Buhari has signed into law the Public Holidays Act Amendment Bill.

With the amendment, June 12 of every year in Nigeria is declared public holiday and Democracy Day.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Sen. Ita Enang, disclosed the signing of the bill into law when he spoke with State House correspondents in Abuja.

His words:  “It amends the Public Holidays Act which now removes May 29 of every year as a public holiday and now makes it June 12.

“By this Act, May 29 is no more a Public Holiday,’’ he said.

The president had on June 6, 2018, announced that the nation’s Democracy Day would henceforth be June 12 and not May 29.

The change in the date, he said, was to honour Chief Moshood Abiola, acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

The election was annulled by the military government led by General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.

The annulment was followed by series of protests which shook the nation to its foundation.

Abiola later died in detention in which he was put by  General Sani Abacha government which took over from the one led by Babangida.
