President Muhammadu Buhari has extended the tenure of Justice Tanko Muhammad as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria by three months.

The president made the request for the extension which was approved by the National Judicial Council, NJC, at its 88th meeting held on April 18, 2019.

The approval has since been forwarded to the president.

The Director, Information, National Judicial Council, Mr. Soji Oye, made the extension public on Saturday in a statement he issued.

He said the statement was to correct a wrong impression that the council would meet in two weeks time to consider the extension of the tenure of the acting CJN.

The statement reads:  “The attention of the National Judicial Council has been drawn to an online newspaper and daily newspaper Report stating that the Council would meet next week to deliberate on the extension of the Acting Appointment of Honourable Dr. Justice I. T. Muhammad CFR, as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria.

“Contrary to the above, the Council actually met on Thursday 18th April, 2019 and at the 88th Meeting considered and approved the request of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, for the extension of the Appointment of Hon. Dr. Justice I. T. Muhammad, CFR, as the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria for another three (3) months and Council has since forwarded its approval to the President.”

It would be recalled that Muhammad was appointed by the president to act as the CJN in January after the suspension of Justice Walter Onnoghen.

Onnoghen was suspended following charges of non-declaration of assets against him.

Onnoghen was tried by the Code of Conduct Tribunal and convicted on Thursday.

In addition to being removed from office, he was banned from holding public office for ten years while he would have to forfeit the money in some of his accounts.

He has however rejected the conviction and appealed the case.
