The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has received another batch of 145 Nigerians stranded in Libya.

They were received Monday night by the Coordinator, Lagos Territorial Office of NEMA, Alhaji  Idria Abubakar Muhammad.

The returnees were brought back by International Organisaton for Migration, IOM, aboard Boeing 737-85k in Al Buraq Air flight number 189/29 with registration number 5A-DMG B738 from Tripoli.

After the profiling carried out, 99 adult males, two male children and five male infants were discovered to be among the returnees while 35 adult females and four infant were females.

The coordinator, while receiving them on arrival admonished them to learn lessons from what they had gone through and always be ready to make the best use of opportunities abundantly available in Nigeria.

“With your return now, you have realised that Nigeria is the best that has opportunities for everyone; all you need to do is tap-in on whatever you want to do and the present government will encourage you to realise it and make Nigeria of our dream possible,” he said.

“Make sure you are not left behind in the development of Nigeria,” he emphasised.

The coordinator also called upon all those who were still thinking of embarking on such a dangerous journey to think twice and desist from it.

He said the IOM and Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment had jointly opened Migrants Resource Centre that were ready to assist any potential migrants to make enquiries about their intended host country, the best mode of transportation to use, security situations as well as job opportunities.

“We are appealing to you to make the best use of these centres located in Lagos, Abuja and Benin for your own benefits,” he said.

Other national agencies that participated in the reception of the returnees are Immigration Services, NAPTIP, Refugee Commission.

A returnee, Ms Aisha Musa, 22 years old, from Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State, while narrating her experience in Libya, blamed Nigerian residents in Libya for not obeying the laws.

She said despite the fact that the country was facing serious problem, they were very patriotic and would not allow violation of the laws.

“Nigerians import alcoholic drinks into the country secretly; the girls wear skimpy or near nude dresses and all these are not permitted there.

“Most of our ladies are into prostitution, Nigerians are fully involved in slave trade of their fellow nationals.

“The law there is that as a woman, you must wear long dresses to cover your body, don’t let the shapes of your body show. Once you obey these, you can move freely irrespective of whether you are black or not,” she said.

Aishat explained further that “Nigerians who are lucky to be housemaids are hostile to the children of their bosses. They beat the children at the slightest provocation. Some of these acts cannot be allowed by any decent society.

“I obeyed their laws, I am happy that I got a very good family that I worked with as housemaid.  Since the war broke out, the family I worked with relocated to Turkey.”
