The Police Command in Lagos has said it invaded the Lagos rally by a group, Rainbow Movement, on Thursday to prevent it from being hijacked by hoodlums.
The movement which is said to have human rights activists like Olisa Agbakoba and Yinka Odumakin to be behind it had gathered at Oranmiyan Hall of Lagos Airport Hotel for the rally when the police barricaded the venue and frustrated the efforts.
The rally was said to have been planned to stop the influence of the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, ahead of the March 9, governorship election in the state.
Tinubu is known to be behind the APC candidate in the governorship election, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
The rally is titled “O to ge” (Enough Enough)
It would be recalled that “O to ge” is the slogan used in the campaign that led to the sacking of Senate President Bukola Saraki in Kwara State in the last National Assembly election.
Tinubu is known to be behind the APC candidate in the governorship election, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Chike Oti, the operatives of the Lagos Command only responded to a distress call.
His words: “What we did was to respond to security threats distress call at the venue of the programme.
“We got credible information that hoodlums were planning to hijack the programme to unleash violence on those expected to attend.
“We cannot sit back to allow any breach of security, we intervened to prevent criminals from gaining access so that the programme could hold peacefully.”
