The United Nations has started a probe into cases of violation of rights to life by Nigerian government and non-state actors.
The probe is with the intention to improve situations as may be identified as matters of concern.
The investigation is being carried out by the United Nations Special Rapporteur, Dr. Agnès Callamard, who is undertaking an official country visit to Nigeria from 19 August to 2 September 2019.
According to a letter from the secretariat of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, the aim of the visit is to obtain first-hand information on the situation on the issue of investigation.
Callamard, it was said, would report on her observations to the Human Rights Council and propose recommendations to improve situations identified as matters of concern.
During her visit, the Special Rapporteur will meet with government authorities, civil society representatives, victims and families.
Already, invitations have been sent out to persons willing to participate in a meeting with the Special Rapporteur on 29 August during her visit to Lagos.
The meeting will take place at the United Nations Information Centre, 17 Alfred Rewane (formerly Kingsway Road), Ikoyi, Lagos at 5.00 p.m.
