The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and the Federal Government will begin negotiation on Thursday in a bid to end the ongoing strike by the union.
The meeting is scheduled to hold at 1.00 p.m. and it is at the instance of the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu.
The National President of ASUU, Biodun Ogunyemi, made this known on Wednesday as he announced the readiness of the union to negotiate with the government.
He said he hoped that the meeting would yield fruit.
The union started an indefinite strike on November 5, 2018 to protest the federal government’s failure to fulfill its promise to improve the funding of universities.
The agreement is contained in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two parties in 2017, but the government has failed to carry it out.
Said Ogunyemi: “It would be recalled that the federal government had agreed to inject N1.3 trillion to fund universities at N220 billion yearly for five years.
“If government fails to fund public universities the situation on campuses may degenerate, worse than the already poor quality teaching and learning environment.”
He said the threat of the government not to pay workers on strike would not affect its members, arguing that its action was in line with Nigerian labour law and international conventions.
