“We can’t sit idly and watch any individual, group and their cohorts rise and threaten the peace, unity, and constitutionalism of the country.”
These are the words of the Department of State Services, DSS.
The DSS, through its spokesperson, Peter Afunaya, spoke on Sunday with journalists on the arrest of Omoyele Sowore over the proposed rally titled “RevolutionNow” scheduled to be carried out on Monday, August 5, saying that they could not sit and watch.
Sowore was the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, in the last general election in Nigeria.
He is believed to be one of those spearheading the proposed rally.
Sowore was arrested on Saturday by the DSS, a development which has drawn condemnation from members of the public.
Speaking on the reason behind Sowore’s arrest, Afunaya said a democratically elected government was in place and it would be wrong for anyone to cause commotion.
“A democratically elected government is in charge, and we cannot allow any person or group to foment chaos or fan the ember of revolution,” he said.
He said though “there is apprehension and anxiety among citizens already, we wish to assure friends of Nigeria, and other law-abiding citizens, that there will be no revolution of any kind come Monday, August 5, 2019.’’
