One of the top contenders for the position of the post of the Senate President of the 9th National Assembly, Danjuma Goje, has stepped down for his counterpart, Ahmed Lawan.

He announced his decision on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, while speaking with State House Correspondents.

The announcement came after a meeting which had in attendance among others, Goje, Lawan and President Muhammadu Buhari.

The meeting was said to have been held at the instance of the Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai.

Addressing correspondents at the State House, Goje disclosed that he had to step down following the request of the president to that effect.

He added that his latest decision was taken to respect the wish of their political party, All Progressives Congress, APC.

Lawan has been endorsed by the APC for the position long before now.

The election of the Senate President will hold on June 11.
