The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has called for a comprehensive investigation into the attempted violent attack on its national secretariat in Abuja.

The party insisted that security agencies must identify and prosecute not only those directly involved but also any sponsors.

In a statement issued by Mr Lawal Ibrahim, Special Adviser on Media to the Executive National Chairman of the Party, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, the party described the attempted invasion of its secretariat by suspected hoodlums and criminal elements as a serious threat to public order, party members, and democratic processes.

According to the party, the attackers were allegedly acting in the interest of individuals seeking to impose themselves as the party’s presidential candidate.

The party pointed out that the  attempted attack was aimed at disrupting activities at the secretariat before security operatives waded in and restored calm.

The SDP commended the swift intervention of the Nigeria Police Force and the Joint Security Task Force for what it described as professionalism and lawfulness in handling the situation.

The party further disclosed that several suspects were apprehended, with reports indicating that dangerous weapons and prohibited substances were recovered from them.

“We trust that all investigations will proceed in accordance with the law and established procedures,” the party added.

It urged security agencies to ensure that investigations were transparent, impartial, and thorough.

“No individual, regardless of status or political ambition, should be above accountability where evidence establishes culpability,” the SDP stated.
