“You all will remember that sometimes ago when an ultra-modern block of classrooms was commissioned at Elemoro Comprehensive High School, Ibeju Lekki, I promised to replicate it in other districts in the state and make it bigger and better. Here we are now keeping our promise to deliver another school and we are going to do more in part of the state,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu stated that the development of the education sector was not going to be in the area of infrastructure alone.

According to him, teachers would also be continually appreciated.

“It is another year where we are going to celebrate teachers at Alausa for their dedication and tenacity, I believe you all will join me to celebrate them.  Teacher are the bedrock of any society and we are going to  celebrate 13 of them.

“We are going to give them brand new cars to encourage them to do more and I believe some of you teachers from Vetland will be among the teachers.

“I want to use this occasion to appeal to the teachers and students of the school to take full ownership of the schools and ensure that its maintained and cared, not only for you, but for the generations that are yet to come.

“I want to congratulate the students who are going to use it and that will come after them. With this facility it is up to you to take full advantage of it and make use of it. I want to thank Mr. Hakeem Smith and his team for giving us this beautiful edifice.”

Earlier, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, said many of the schools in Lagos State had been abandoned by previous administration but when Sanwo-Olu came on board he promised to bring back all the abandoned schools to life and make them attractive again.

“The result is what we are seeing now,” she said.

Adefisayo said the school had many attractive things that a good school should have.

Her words: “We are here to commission the school which many people have described as a waste.  We are bringing it back to life and for the betterment of humanity and the use of the students.

“Vetland is a performing school; this is the school where we have the best West Africa Examination Council result for two years consecutively. One of the students had nine A1. The students also did well in their Joint Admission Matriculation Board examination and they are now in universities studying courses of their choices on scholarship.

“I also thank and appreciate the performing teachers of the school. When this administration came on board Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the promise that education would be focused on. The state focused on it as a major pillar of its agenda and increased yearly education budgetary allocation and completed all abandoned projects.

“When we came on board, we met about 47 uncompleted projects in our schools and they have been completed now.  We only have about six of them yet to be completed and we would soon complete them.

“This administration has invested in so many schools,  we have Elemoro school and we also have some schools in Badagry we would soon complete. We also promised to integrate technology into education and this is another promise kept.

“This school building we are commissioning is unique because as an educationist, in the school we have smart chalk board and tablets for the students. What we are doing with the tablets is that we are moving the students into 21st century technology where they learn things in a new way.”

The Chairman, Special Committee On Rehabilitation of Public Schools, Mr. Hakeem Smith, thanked Governor Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, for giving him and his team the opportunity to transform the abandoned school to a befitting one.

He said “what we use for the construction of the school are containers that abound in every part of the state.”

“I want to assure the teachers and the students that whenever it rains they should be rest assured that water cannot penetrate the class rooms and other apartments,” he added.

According to him, all necessary steps were taken, including soil test, before the erection of the building.

“It is safe and has necessary IT materials for teachers and students,” he said.
