Road safety: FRSC seeks co-operation of corps members
Adeleye

The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Corps Commander Rotimi Adeleye, has called on members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, to contribute to achieving maximum safety.

He said the corps members should cooperate with the FRSC.

Adeleye made the call when he addressed the 2019 Batch ‘C’ (Stream 11) corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation, Camp, Ikare-Akoko.

The sector commander disclosed that the management of NYSC and FRSC had entered into agreement to safeguard corps members on the nation’s highways.

“Gentlemen corps members, the NYSC Director General addressed all the Sector Commanders in Abuja where he expressed concern at the spate of road traffic accidents involving corps members.

“As a result of this, we have the mandate of the management of both federal agencies to regulate the movement of corps members travelling across the country.

“We have henceforth directed members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and Road Transport Employee Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) not to allow corps members travel in their vehicles as from 6 p.m.”

This action, according to him is to protect corps members from engaging in late night travels and prevent them from embarking on frivolous journeys.

The FRSC chief warned that any recalcitrant corps member caught shall face the disciplinary action from the NYSC while any transporter found to be aiding and abetting such corps members would have his vehicle impounded.

He appealed to them to join first responders team of the FRSC and report immediately any untoward occurrence within their vicinity or along the way, adding that they should always endeavour to use landmarks to describe the place of the occurrence for the response team to locate the scene.

He gave the toll free number of the Corps as 122.

He admonished the corps members to desist from looking for free ride by the side of the roads but always board vehicles at the parks as free ride giver might have ulterior motives.

Adeleye advised corps members to travel very early in the morning so as to get to their respective destinations before the night time.
