The police have charged six people to court over alleged participation in the Revolution Now protests scheduled for Monday in Lagos State.
One of those arraigned at the Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, is a lawyer.
Those arraigned are Ehis Omoshomio, 35; Gabriel Ojumah, 51; Juwon Sanyaolu, 22; Stanley Anobi, 28; Elias Ozikpu, 30 and Kenechukwu Ukachukwu, 25.
They were charged with unlawful assembly and conduct likely to cause breach of the peace.
The people, according to Mr. Ibijoke Akinpelu, counsel from the State Criminal Intelligence and Information Department (SCIID) Panti, and the resident prosecutor, Insp. Kehinde Omisakin, were said to have committed the offence on Monday at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos at 10.00 a.m.
They were said to have gathered at the stadium with the intention of protesting.
The gathering which was said to be unlawful it was stated caused panic to members of the public.
The offence they were alleged to have committed, was said to be in contravention of Sections 44 and 168(d) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The Chief Magistrate, A.O. Komolafe admitted one of the defendants, Ojumah, who is a lawyer, to bail based on self-recognition.
The five others were granted N100,000 bail each with two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned to September 26, 2019.
It would be recalled that security agencies frustrated efforts by some persons to carry out a protest titled Revolution Now.
The protest, it was said, was to retrieve power from the present government.
Earlier on Saturday, one of the leaders of the protest, Omoyele Sowore, a presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, was arrested by the Department of State Services, DSS.
