Taekwondo experts have been employed to train young girls in self defence to avoid being victims of rape.

Betty Akeredolu, wife of the Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, made this known on Friday.

She had gone to the office of the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr Undie Adie, to express her displeasure over the rape of a student of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, by soldiers at the Ikare/Akungba road checking point last week, when she spoke about the efforts.

During the visit, she warned that the case of the rape should be taken with all seriousness.

According to her, the rapist should be treated as criminals and as such prosecuted.

She said it was regrettable that those who were supposed to protect the civilians were those attacking them.

She said it had become obvious that women were not safe with anyone, hence the decision to build the girls up to be able to defend themselves through taekwondo.

She said dealing with the soldiers involved in the rape would deter others in future.

She said she had initially planned a one-million-woman protest against rape in army uniform for Thursday, but shelved the idea.

According to her, she did not want a situation where some politicians would catch in on it and cause chaos.

In his reaction, the police boss, Adie, promised to treat the case with seriousness once it was transferred to the police.

The case, he said, would be taken to court and dealt with appropriately.
