Rape: Special courts coming, says NAPTIP boss

A special court to try rapists may soon be set up, the Director-General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, NAPTIP, Mrs Julie Okah-Donli, has announced.

She made the announcement on Wednesday in Abuja just as she warned that anyone found to be justifying rape would be arrested.

Okah-Donli said her agency was ready to approach the Ministry of Justice to push for the establishment of the special court.

She said rapists should be jailed for life instead of facing capital punishment.

The NAPTIP boss who emphasized the need to sensitise the general public on rape issues blamed parents for not adequately taking care of their children or wards.

She said most rape cases were committed by members of the family.

She urged the public to call NAPTIP’s lines during distress concerning rape.

She added that cases could also be reported on social media platforms such as the Facebook, Twitter, Instagram among others.

It would be recalled that there has been an increase in the number of rape cases in the country in recent time.
