No fewer than 24 persons have been arrested by the police in Lagos over the violent protest that rocked some parts of the state over the ban on commercial motorcycles and tricycles on Monday.
Some persons suspected to be commercial motorcyles and tricycles riders stormed the streets of Apapa, Ijora and Surulere in the morning to show their displeasure.
About three people were feared dead in the protest which turned violent as guns and other dangerous weapons were reported to have been used.
However, in a statement on the protest, the spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Bala Elkana denied any loss of lives.
“No life was lost,” he said in a statement he issued.
However, he said 24 suspects were arrested by the operatives of Ijora Badia Division of the Nigeria Police Force.
The statement reads:
“Twenty four suspects were arrested for blocking major roads in Ijora, causing obstructions.
“On 3rd February, 2020 at about 0745hours, Police received a distress call that some hoodlums in large number armed with cutlasses, suspected to be okada riders and thugs blocked some major roads around Ijora Oloye, Amusu, Ijora 7up, Ijora under bridge, Sifa junction and Gaskiya gangare area all within Ijora Badia Division.
“The hoodlums caused major obstructions on the roads, burning tyres, looting and stealing from unsuspecting road users.
“Police officers from Ijora Badia, Area B Command and Special Strike Force on Social Miscreants were promptly deployed to the scenes.
“The situation was brought under control.
“The obstructions were cleared for free flow of traffic.
“No life was lost.
“Twenty four suspects were arrested.
“Investigation is ongoing, the suspects will be charged to Court.”
