The All Progressives Congress, APC, on Tuesday expressed regret over the attack on the president and other party chieftains by thugs during the presidential campaign rally held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Monday.

It accused the Governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun, of being behind the attack.

It would be recalled that the APC is supporting Dapo Abiodun for the governorship post against Amosun’s choice of Abiodun Akinlade in the coming election.

During the campaign where Dapo Abiodun would be presented to supporters of the APC, the thugs, carrying the banner of the Allied People’s Movement, APM, the party to which Abiodun Akinlade supported by Amosun defected hauled satchet water, sticks, pet bottles and other at the chieftains of the party at the podium.

It took the shield formed by security agents to save the president from the attack.

Reacting on the development on Tuesday, the National Publicity Secretary, Lanre Issa-Onilu, in a statement described the action as a gross misconduct.

According to him, Amosun deliberately positioned thugs to attack and embarrass the President and the party’s leadership.

He however said that the party would review the case and not condone acts of indiscipline, indiscretion and anti-party activities from any party member no matter how highly placed.

His words: The APC regrets Monday’s premeditated attacks sponsored by Governor Ibikunle Amosun on President Muhammadu Buhari and other senior party leaders at the venue of the presidential campaign rally in Ogun State.

“This is one act of indiscipline too many. The APC will not condone acts of indiscipline, indiscretion and anti-party activities from any party member no matter how highly placed.

“The party will review this gross misconduct of deliberately positioning thugs to attack and embarrass the President and the party’s leadership. No single person will be allowed to put his personal and selfish interests ahead of the wishes of the people of Ogun State and elsewhere.

“Post primaries, the decision of the National Working Committee to uphold the wishes of party members is unbendable. Therefore, whatever means being presently deployed by persons intending to undermine the wishes of the people for personal gains will not be tolerated.”
