Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission, OGSIEC, on Tuesday, sought the support of the state police command as it prepares for the forthcoming local government election scheduled to hold on the July 24, 2021.
The call was made when the commission paid a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, in his office, at Eleweran Abeokuta.
Speaking through its chairman, Babatunde Osibodu, OGSIEC acknowledged the fact that police being the lead agency in internal security, had a key role to play in conduct of any election.
The chairman noted further that the commission could not conduct any successful election without the support of the police because the protection of election materials, as well as the electoral officers was the sole responsibility of the police.
Therefore, the success of the forthcoming local government election depended largely on the cooperation and support of officers and men of the command.
Responding, the Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, assured the commission of the command’s resolve to ensure that the election was conducted under a very peaceful atmosphere. He stressed that the command would do everything possible within the ambit of the law to ensure free, fair and credible election.
