Ondo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Independent National Electoral Commission, Dr. Rufus Oloruntoyin Akeju, has described the roles of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in electoral success as pivotal.

Akeju made the assertion when he played host to NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Grace Akpabio, in his office.

The meeting, according to the Resident Electoral Commissioner was to update NYSC, as one of the critical stakeholders to the commission on the far reaching modalities put in place preparatory to the gubernatorial election coming up in the state.

According to him, the present challenges faced by INEC in view of the coronavirus pandemic had made the management to embark on series of innovations which would be in tandem with COVID -19 precautionary measures and protocols.

Akeju who had previously served in similar capacity in Osun and Oyo states respectively said that NYSC would be duly informed of their responsibilities as soon as it received ratification of recommendations made to her corporate headquarters in Abuja.

“I want to assure you that INEC is poised to improve on the previous elections conducted and you will agree with me that gubernatorial election both in Edo and Ondo states will come in a new dimension as a result of COVID -19.

“The State Office has sent proposal about the conduct of this election to our corporate headquarters in Abuja and we shall brief you on the roles the corps members are expected to perform during the election,” he said.

He revealed that the Commission had produced code of conduct, a one page document aside other guidelines which all ad-hoc staff and electorate must familiarise themselves with before and during the election.

The INEC umpire in Ondo State hinted that the security personnel to be engaged would go through specialised training which was aimed at sustaining the confidence of Nigerians in the electoral process.

Akeju felicitated with the Akpabio on her birthday which was on the day of the visit.

Speaking earlier, Akpabio said that the Director General, NYSC, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, acknowledged the humane role played by INEC when some corps members had various challenges during the last elections.

She harped on the need for the commission and NYSC to develop a template that would encourage corps members to want to participate in view of myriads of challenges experienced in the previous elections.

The NYSC boss also harped on the resolution of NYSC management not to send corps members to riverine areas for election duties and therefore appealed to the commission to factor that in when working on the modalities for the election.

She thanked the REC and the commission’s management for always opening its door to NYSC in the state, and equally for celebrating with her on her birthday.
