Nigerian youths should channel their energies towards productive ventures that would bring about positive impact, instead of taking to drugs.

This is the advice by the National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency and the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

The state Commander, NDLEA, Haruna Gagara, gave the advice in a lecture with the theme “Consequences of Drug Abuse and Trafficking” to the 2019 Batch ‘C’ (Stream 1) corps members at the Permanent Orientation Camp Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State.

The commander said that the lecture among other things was to curtail the alarming rate of cases of drug abuse among the youths in the country.

Represented by Superintendent Olagoke Balogun, Gagara said the effects of drugs on the society was multi-dimensional and required the collaborate efforts of all and sundry to wage unrelenting war against the menace.

“Today, it is instructive to note that a large percentage of the youths get involved in illicit use of drugs as a result of peer pressure and environmental influences, which in turn have physical, psychological and social consequences on the victim.”

According to him, the youths had fundamental roles to play in ensuring that the society became drug-free by not engaging or indulging in the act but equally to discourage others from taking it.

He explained that drug trafficking included illegal trade of drugs either by cultivation or importation.

According to him, offenders were liable to fifteen years jail term or life imprisonment when apprehended.

He stressed that ignorance of possession was not an excuse in the court of law.

While urging the corps members to be good ambassadors of NYSC and their respective families shunning illicit use of drugs and sedatives, he advised them to be mindful of the company they kept and the type of assistance they offered strangers.
