In its efforts to streamline academic activities, the Management of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, MAPOLY, Abeokuta has revealed its readiness to begin nine new programmes.
According to the Head, Public Relations and Protocol, of MAPOLY, Mr. Yemi Ajibola, the Acting Rector, Dr Adeoye Odedeji, made the disclosure while receiving the national president of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, NITP, Olutoyin Ayinde, at the polytechnic as part of his working visit to Ogun State.
According to him, “the first semester examination would commence on Monday, 30th of August, and later in September, the accreditation and re-accreditation exercise of our programmes would follow.
“We have planned that during the accreditation, nine new programmes would be introduced at National Diploma and Higher National Diploma levels.
“Computer Hardware Engineering Technology, Network and Cyber Security Technology, Software Engineering Technology have been listed.
“We would also introduce Social Work Development, Fisheries as well as Environmental Biology, Environmental Health Technology, Epidemiology and Disease Control Technology, Library Science and Information Technology.”
Odedeji said the essence of the programmes was to plan and expand the capacity of the polytechnic to attract new students in line with the global standard.
He further expressed the readiness of the polytechnic for full accreditation of its Banking and Finance, Mechanical Engineering, Leisure and Tourism Management at the HND level.
The Acting Rector recounted some challenges faced by the institution that warranted sloppy developmental conditions on the academic activities.
“When I came in as acting rector in December 2019, there was a backlog of unpaid six months salaries.
“We were on the verge of settling these salaries before the advent of Coronavirus which caused great havoc to the school and global economy.
“But presently, the Polytechnic has overcome the challenges of salary payments, and other challenges too would disappear by His Grace,” he said.
He stated that “the July 2021 salary was fully settled on Thursday, 19th August 2021, which shows that all outstanding salary payments have been cleared.”
He attributed the success to the tremendous support of the state governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.
“We are so grateful to Governor Dapo Abiodun for permitting us to have access to the money being generated because every month, we take our requests for approval, and he graciously approves it.
“The money we generated does not belong to MAPOLY, it is a public fund, it is supposed to go straight into the treasury of Ogun State, but the governor allowed us to have access to it after approval,” he said.
Speaking earlier, the NITP National President, Ayinde stressed the need for planning in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions for physical and economical growth of the nation.
The Registrar, Mr Emmanuel Adeleye; Bursar, Mr Fatai Yekini; Director of Academic Planning, Dr. Mrs. Yetunde Lanre-Iyanda were present to receive the visitors.
