Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, Oto-Ijanikin, is set to impart entrepreneurship education to their undergraduates in addition to the award of degrees.
It is in pursuance of the objective that the university is organising a three-day Stakeholders’ Entrepreneurship Sensitization Retreat for members of the Governing Council and Management.
The retreat tagged “Making Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) the University for Entrepreneurship Education” started on Friday and will end on Monday.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, Hajia Sekinat Olusola Yusuf, in her opening remarks said that the introduction of the entrepreneurship education in the university was to contribute in making Nigerian youths inculcate the spirit of hard work very early in life by making them to be self-reliant and not depend on white collar jobs.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, in her address of welcome said that with the many challenges faced by the government of all states in Nigeria, it was becoming expedient for institutions of higher learning to train students to be self-dependent.
According to her, LASUED as a relatively one year old in the game, was ready to set out for entrepreneurship education from the onset.
Lafiaji-Okuneye also said that the institution was ready for the huge responsibility of infusing entrepreneurial characteristics into its products in the pursuit of academic excellence.
The Vice-Chancellor further said that with a clear cut strategic sustainability plan, it would run the programme differently, and be able to bring the university to a level of self-sufficiency in operational capacities and efficiency, relying less on the proprietor.
Professor Lafiaji-Okuneye concluded that the entrepreneurship education was an achievable target and expressed belief that the earlier the university started the journey, the better it would be in the desire to make the institution “The University for Entrepreneurship Education”.
