LASUED matriculates pioneer students, V-C admonishes them

The Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, on Tuesday, held the maiden matriculation ceremony for undergraduate degree pioneer students at its main campus at Oto/Ijanikin, in Lagos.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, in her address on behalf of the governing council, Senate, management, staff and students of the institution, expressed appreciation to the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, and his administration for the continuous support.

Lafiaji-Okuneye said LASUED was not established simply to add to the number of universities dotting the higher educational landscape of Nigeria but as a citadel of knowledge created to meet a felt need for a university that will make a wholesome difference in addressing the education inequality among the citizens.

While congratulating the 3,300 new students, she said that the first set of students admitted into the university, she admonished them to be good ambassadors of the university and be passionate about their future.

According to her, the university was prepared to make their shoulders available for them to stand on and be able to see clearer, better and farther.

She said the development of all their potentials to become the best they could was one desire that would never be compromised.

Lafiaji-Okuneye further stated that the university hoped to train them such that they could be capable of rising above circumstances, and that it was the obligation of the university to help them discover, develop and deploy their talents to deal with challenges so as to add value to themselves, the society and world at large.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor enjoined the students to be obedient to those in authority, and to be of good conduct throughout their stay in the university as contained in the oath taken by the them on the matriculation ground as breach of the oath would definitely attract sanctions.

She also admonished them to steer clear of cultism, hooliganism and other forms of social menace that might impugn the integrity of young, promising institution.

She assured them of maximum security on all the campuses of the university.

Lafiaji-Okuneye then emphasized that the distance between matriculation and convocation was quite wide, and it was important that students attended lectures regularly, promptly, and did all their assignments.

She further advised the students to ignore discordant views, shun deviant behaviours and disregard anything inimical to the public good, adding that they must use of the knowledge they acquired during the just concluded orientation programme conducted across the campuses of the university.

She also encouraged the students to actively participate in the co-curricular activities available on the campuses with the aid of the available standard facilities provided in order to avail them opportunities, not only to excel in learning, but possibly to become the university sports ambassadors.

She said it was very important for the students to strive to uphold the ideals of the university.
