Lagos State University of Education, LASUED, held its inaugural meeting of the Senate today at the main campus, Oto-Ijanikin Lagos.
The inaugural meeting attended by principal officers, all professors, deans and heads of department kick started the admission of students and other academic activities in the university.
In her address of welcome at the inaugural meeting, the acting vice chancellor of LASUED, Professor Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye, recalled that an Executive Bill for the establishment of the university was passed by the Lagos State House of Assembly on 22nd of November 2021 and signed into law by the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo- Olu on February 2, 2022.

Professor Lafiaji-Okuneye further said that following the submission of the appropriate documents to the Executive Secretary, ES, of the National University Commission, NUC, the governor received the Certificate of Recognition of the university on February 8, 2022, and began active participation in the 2022/2023 JAMB Admissions Exercise.

According to the acting vice-chancellor, the Governing Council was constituted and Principal Officers appointed in acting capacity.
Under the leadership of Professor Lafiaji-Okuneye, resource verification exercise was carried out by panels of experts from the National University Commission, NUC, on the proposed sixty-seven academic programmes in the university from 19th to 30th September, 2022.
The acting vice-chancellor then gladly informed the Senate that the superintendent body approved the establishment of the full-time mode of the undergraduate programmes to run in the university with effect from 2022/2023 academic session.
Civic Education was not approved because there was no Bench Mark Minimum Academic Standard, BMAS, for it yet.
Lafiaji-Okuneye specially appreciated the state governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for his interest in education and progress of youth and welfare of all people in the state.
Bidemi Bilkis Lafiaji-Okuneye also appreciated and recognised the efforts and contributions of Professor Mushay Ogundipe and the Technical Implementation Committee headed by Professor Emeritus Adebisi Bamiro.
In her keynote address, Alhaja Sekinat Olusola Yusuf, Pro-Chancellor of the university, at the Senate inaugural meeting recognized and appreciated the commitment of the executive governor of the state, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, to quality tertiary education most especially with the recent establishment of two new universities in the state including the Lagos State University of Education.
Alhaja Sekinat Yusuf also acknowledged the tenacity and doggedness of the Special Adviser on Education, Barrister Tokunbo Wahab, towards the establishment of the institution.
Alhaja Yusuf further stated that the Governing Council comprised of experienced superordinate citizens with enviable pedigrees and achievements of excellence of which the approval of the establishment of the full- time mode of the undergraduate programmes by the NUC is one of the achievements.
The Pro-Chancellor noted that quite an impressive number of candidates had shown interest in studying in the university and offer of admission would begin immediately after the inauguration of the Senate.
In his goodwill message, Professor Mushay Ogundipe on behalf of the technical implementation committee felicitated with the Senate for the achievement on the approval of the 66 programmes for the university.
Professor Ogundipe reiterated and admonished the Senate to be up and doing as the engine room of the institution.
According to him, part of the role of the Senate was provision facilities to carry out the policy proposed and determine the state and the quality of the products and discipline.
Professor Ogundipe also encouraged the Senate members to be well groomed in the proceedings and be abreast of the law establishing the university while they meet constantly.
Professor Adedokun Olaide in her goodwill message said that the Senate determined the raw academic quality and must be run by collective reasoning, collective decision with people able to put their experience and opinions together.
The Senate is the highest decision making body on academic matters relating to the university and responsible for the approval of new programmes, as well as granting of degrees and diplomas
