A notorious gang operating in Ilupeju area of Lagos State, on Monday, ambushed a police team and killed a man who was passing by in the shootout.
The man was killed when a stray bullet fired by members of the gang hit him.
The police team, led by Inspector Mohammed Akeem, was being led by an alleged notorious gang leader Ikechukwu Monye ‘m’ 39 years old, to where their arms were kept, when it was attacked.
The incident occurred at Ajisegiri Street, Ilupeju, Lagos.
The Public Relations Officer of the Lagos Police Command, Bala Elkana, in a statement made available to FrontPage said the assailants shot sporadically and in the process, killed a man who was passing by.
He said the corpse had been removed and deposited at the mortuary for post mortem.
Elkana said reinforcement was quickly drafted to the scene and the area cordoned off with a view to apprehending the members of the gang.
The police officer informed that Ilupeju had experienced violent attacks between members of Aiye and Eiye confraternities.
Members of the two cult groups, he stated equally engaged in heinous crimes such as armed robbery, rape and murder within Ilupeju and other areas.
He said members of the gang had been on the wanted list of the Police for murder of six persons during three robbery operations that they carried out.
The police command implored members of the public to remain calm, giving the assurance that it would ensure safety of lives and property in the affected areas.
It vowed not to tolerate any form of crime, just as it disclosed that it had intensified patrol and surveillance in the affected areas.
The command commiserated with the family of the deceased, saying that justice would prevail.
