The fire that engulfed a five-storey building at Gbajumo Street, Balogun Market, Lagos Island, has finally been put out.
The building was said to be largely occupied by traders in clothes and shoes.
According to reports by the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, at the scene of the fire outbreak, it took the combined efforts of fire fighters from the federal and Lagos State fire services, United Bank for Africa, the Nigerian Army and LASEMA Response Unit, LRU, to put out the fire.
Also on ground for necessary support were the Red Cross, Lagos State Neighbourhood and Safety Corps among others.
Recall that there was a fire outbreak at the 5-storey building at about 12.45 a.m. of Thursday, and following the efforts of fire fighters from the federal and state stations, it was put out at about 3.00 a.m.
It was reported that while dampening was ongoing, the fire, however, started again at about 6.00 a.m.
Report from NEMA indicated that although the fire had been prevented from spreading to other buildings, getting to the source had proved difficult.
It took the manual demolition of some structures before the source of the fire could be accessed after which the all out fire fighting work was carried out.
