Nigerians, particularly those running small scale businesses, should join cooperatives societies to have hope for a better future as individuals and their businesses.
The president of AnuOluwapo Cooperative Multipurpose Society Limited (Ijoko-Lemode, Ifo, Ogun State), Mr. Babatunde Osevbobo, made the call on Friday during his society’s third Annual General Meeting.
According to him, cooperative societies give the rare opportunities that are lacking in other financial institutions.
His words: “I expect people to join cooperative societies because in joining it, there is hope for the future for them as individuals and for their businesses. They have hope to solve any financial constraint that may come their ways at any time.”
He added that the relevance of cooperative societies in Nigeria could not be overemphasised in view of the generally poor financial state in the country.
Cooperative societies, he said, gave the needed support without the kind of conditions given by other financial institutions.
“You will discover that getting help from financial institutions is like a thing one cannot easily come by. Cooperative society is a platform whereby people come together, bring money together and give out to one another in turn to do business, thereby making little profit it,” he said.
He also encouraged those who had been in the societies to save more as, according to him, the more a members saves, the higher the amount he or she would be able to borrow, and the more dividend he or she would be able to collect as dividend.
