Declare a state of emergency over the state of insecurity in the country, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has urged the Federal Government on Tuesday.
It said that its position was in support of that of the former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and others, would bring about an end to the spate of killings.
Obasanjo had, in an open letter on Monday, called on the Federal Government for an urgent action on the state of insecurity.
He spoke against the backdrop of the killing of Funke Olakunri, daughter of the leader of the Yoruba socio-political group, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.
Expressing the support of the PDP for Obasanjo’s position, the national chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus, said it was certainly not a good time for Nigeria.
His words: “The PDP urges President Buhari to respond appropriately to their timely advisories by declaring state of emergency on security in the country and go further urgently to address the issues raised in Obasanjo’s letter.”
He added: “It certainly cannot be well for a nation that creates an ugly situation where a 94-year-old nationalist would be burying her 58-year-old daughter.
“This certainly is not Nigeria of our dream.”
Secondus who addressed a press conference in Abuja said the letter by Obasanjo was detailed on the poor state of insecurity of the country.
According to him, it also highlighted the implications of the current state of the nation and what awaited the country if urgent action was not taken.
“As national chairman of the main opposition party, I cannot agree less with the former president.
“I cannot agree less with him where he said among other things that ‘The main issue, if I may dare say, is poor management or mismanagement of diversity which, on the other hand, is one of our greatest and most important assets…’”
