Insecurity: NGF to set up committee, defers stand on state police

Determined to tackle the problem of insecurity in the country, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, NGF, has resolved to set up a security committee at the National Economic Council, NEC, level.

This was made known by the chairman of the forum and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

The decision is contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting held on Wednesday in Abuja.

Fayemi said although the issue of state police was not considered, the NGF would discuss it later and make its position known.

“The Forum resolved to set up a security committee at the National Economic Council level and retain security as a reoccurring item on its agenda for the foreseeable future, in order to continue to monitor development on security situation,” he said.

The governor said in order to aid development of the states of the federation, the forum would commence a State Peer Review Mechanism programme.

He also spoke about the focus of the current leadership of the forum.

He said the focus would, among other things, be security, human capital development, jobs creation, constitutional reform particularly devolution.

He said the forum would support economic advisory, policy advisory, knowledge management and public financial management.

“Members pledged to support the new leadership to drive the mandate of the Forum to promote collaboration and consensus among Governors on matters of public policy,” he added.

He stated that the forum had also planned to hold a one-day interactive session with the World Bank and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on ongoing development engagements across states on June 26.

According to him, the event would also host an Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) retreat with the Joint Tax Board and Chairmen of the Internal Revenue Service of States.

Fayemi said that the forum received a presentation on Sub-national Investment Promotion from the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC),  Ms. Yewande Sadiku.

Present at the meeting were the deputy chairman of the forum, Governor Aminu Tambulwal of Sokoto State, and governors of Lagos, Borno, Osun, Kano, Ondo, Jigawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Kogi, Plateau, Ebonyi, Nasarawa, Ogun, Edo, Gombe, Niger, Bayelsa and Oyo states.

The deputy governors of Katsina, Zamfara, Enugu and Imo were also present.
