President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has emerged the winner of Nigeria’s presidential election held on Saturday.

The announcement was made by the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, at 4.39 a.m. on Wednesday.

The collation lasted three days at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

Buhari polled 15,191,847 votes to defeat his main rival, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Atiku polled 11,262,978 votes.

The difference in the votes is 3,928,869.

Buhari won 19 states while Atiku won 17 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

Declaring the winner, Yakubu said: “I, Professor Mahmood Yakubu hereby certify that I was the returning officer for the election held on the 23rd of February, 2019.

“That Muhammadu Buhari having satisfied the requirements of the law, having scored the highest number of votes is hereby returned elected.”

INEC said the certificate of return would be given to President Buhari and Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

It would be recalled that the PDP has rejected the results of the election.

The rejection was announced on Monday by the National Chairman of the leading opposition party, Prince Uche Secondus, in Abuja when the collation was ongoing.

He claimed that the results announced by INEC were incorrect.

He claimed that the figures did not correspond with that of the PDP as they had been tampered with.

His words: “Our collation centres have the original results from all the polling units in the country. That is from where are going to reclaim our results.

“The results are incorrect and unacceptable to our party. Officials of the APC working with INEC have decided to alter results to affect our people. This must now be resisted by every well-meaning Nigerian.

“INEC must live up to its responsibility. They are under pressure. We have the facts and when the time comes, we begin to release them.”
