The Supreme Court has dismissed the application by Emeka Ihedioha, seeking a review of the court’s judgement which sacked him as the governor of Imo State.
The court had on January 14, 2020, sacked Ihedioha from office and declared Hope Uzodinma as the rightful winner of the Imo governorship election of March 9, 2019.
Ihedioha is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the election while Uzodinma contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
Displeased with the verdict of the Supreme Court, Ihedioha called for a review of the judgement.
Giving its verdict on Tuesday, the judges led by Ibrahim Muhammed maintained the court’s original position.
“The verdict of the Supreme Court is a finality,” the panel declared.
Olukayode Ariola who read the judgement stated: “The finality of the Supreme Court is entrenched in the constitution. Inherent powers can only be evoked if there is a missing link and that is why sometimes the court could be called upon to dot the ‘i’ and cross the ‘t’.”
One of the judges, Chima Chiweze, however held a different position.
“A judgement or order can be set aside on the merits. This court has the power to overrule itself and has done so in the past,” said Chiweze.
