The convener of Revolution Now, Omoyele Sowore, has sued the Department of State Services, DSS, for N500 million over alleged illegal detention.
Joined in the suit is the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.
Dated November 20, 2019, the suit is marked FHC/ABJ /CS/1409/2019.
In the suit, he stated that his continued detention since November 7 was a violation of his right to freedom as ordered by the court on November 6.
Some of the reliefs sought included: “An order of this court compelling the respondents to pay to the applicant the sum of N500,000, 000, 00 ( five hundred million naira) as general and aggravated damages for the illegal violation of the applicant’s fundamental right to life, dignity of his person, fair hearing, health, freedom of movement and freedom of association.
“An order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents from further violating the applicant’s fundamental rights in any manner whatsoever and however without lawful justification.”
Sowore was detained in August following the plan to carry out a protest titled Revolution Now against the government of President Muhammadu Buhari.
The protest was frustrated as security personnel barricaded the National Stadium, Surulere, venue of the protest.
He was later charged to court for treasonable felony among other crimes.
Although the court has ordered his release, the DSS is yet to let him off the hook.
