Some soldiers in Operation Whirl Stroke meant to stem the spate of violence in Benue State were ambushed by some gunmen, leaving a captain badly injured.
The injured captain is Zakari Sani.
Sani was said to be badly injured and is currently receiving medical attention.
In some tweets by the Defence Headquarters on Tuesday, Sani was evacuated to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital after which he was taken to Ceda Crest Hospital in Abuja.
He is said to be responding to treatment.
“Captain Zakari Sani, a very courageous and hardworking officer, was ambushed alongside other soldiers in Benue State while on operation WHIRL STROKE. The officer was badly wounded and was evacuated to Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi,” the tweet reads.
The military stated further: “The team of doctors and other medical staff including expatriate are attending to the officer whose situation though serious is getting better by the day. He has undergone several medical procedures which have helped to stabilise him further.”
It added: “The CDS has placed Medical Surveillance on the officer for eventual medical evacuation outside the country. It should be noted that foreign medical evacuation is a process that is done with the advice of the medical doctor that is administering the stabilisation treatment.
“Otherwise the intended objective may not be achieved when evacuated abroad. The #Military takes care of the medical needs of her personnel, including her retired colleagues. As necessary, various cases are sent on Medevac, especially those personnel wounded in active service.”
It would be recalled that attacks on villages in Benue State and other areas in the North Central part of the country was on the increase earlier in the year.
Scores of persons were killed by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen who were said to be against anti-grazing law in the state.
It was in order to stem the tide that Operation Whirl Stroke was launched.
The operation saw the deployment of security personnel and equipment which reduced the extent of violence in the area.
