Remains of Shagari

The remains of former president, Alhaji Shehu Shagari, has been interred.

He was buried in his home town at Shagari local government area of Sokoto State at about 3.30 p.m. on Saturday according to Islamic rites.

The prayer session was led by former Vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, Professor Shehu Galadanchi.

Earlier before the rites, Governor Aminu Tambuwal received the corpse at the Sultan Abubakar Airport, Sokoto, when it arrived from Abuja.

Present at the burial ceremony were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha and governors of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.

Also present, among others were, former Sokoto State governor, Attahiru Bafarawa; former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega; Waziri Sokoto; Senator Aliyu Wamakko; former Minister, Mukhtar Shagari, and others.

Shehu Shagari died on Friday at the National Hospital, Abuja.

He was 93.

Tributes from prominent Nigerians have been pouring in over the death of Shagari.

He has been described by different persons as an upright leader who was committed to the cause of making the country a better place.

He was generally described as one who worked to improve the lives of the poor in the society.
