Nigeria’s Second Republic President, Alhaji Usman Aliyu Shehu Shagari, is dead.

He was 93 years old.

His grandson, Bello Shagari, announced his death on Friday on his Twitter handle.

He said the former president died at the National Hospital in Abuja.

“I regret announcing the death of my grandfather, H.E Alhaji Shehu Shagari, who died right now after brief illness at the National hospital, Abuja,” the tweet reads.

Shagari ruled the nation between 1979 and 1983.

His government was, however, toppled when a military coup was carried out with Muhammadu Buhari as the Head of State on January 1, 1984.

Born on February 25, 1925, Shagari was a teacher.

He later joined politics in 1951.
