As part of efforts to carry out his threat to to do legal battle over the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election in court, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has presented his legal team.

Atiku is the presidential candidate of the leading opposition, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He lost to the All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate, Buhari, in the keenly contested election.

He has since described the results of the election as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as unacceptable.

According to him, the election witnessed gross malpractices.

He therefore vowed to challenge Buhari’s victory in court.

In a statement by his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku named a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Livy Uzoukwu, as the head of the team to do the battle for him.

“I have just inaugurated my legal team and charged them with the responsibility of ensuring that our stolen mandate is retrieved.

“I am encouraged by the presence of fearless men and women of the Bench. The judiciary which had in the past discharged itself ably, is once again being called upon to deliver judgement on this matter that will be untainted by lucre and uncowed by the threat of immoral power,” he said.

He stressed that he would not mortgage the mandate said to have been given to him by Nigerians in the presidential election.

Some prominent Nigerians have called on him not to go to court but support the government in promoting the nation’s democracy.

One of those who made the call is a prominent lawyer and human rights activist, Olisa Agbakoba.

Former Military President, Ibrahim Babangida, also made a similar call, saying that he should work towards the promotion of the nation’s democracy.
