Election: Govt declares Friday public holiday with exemption

The Federal Government has declared Friday, February 22 as a public holiday.

This is to enable Nigerians prepare ahead of the general election which begins on Saturday.

However, bankers and others offering essential services are exempted from the public holiday

The statement by the Ministry of Interior to that effect reads in part: “The work-free day is to enable citizens return to their polling units for the reschedule Presidential and National Assembly elections.

“Security agencies have been directed to ensure safety of lives and property before, during and after the general election.”

The general election which was scheduled for last week was postponed to Saturday, February 23 by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, following logistics problems.

The Chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced the postponement some hours to the commencement of the election.
