The Department of State Services, DSS, has promised to comply with the court order granting permission to the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, to receive medical attention abroad.

The promise to comply was made in a statement issued by DSS spokesman, Mr. Peter Afunaya, on Monday.

It said it was already liaising with some stakeholders to ensure compliance with the order.

“This is to inform the public that the Department of State Services (DSS) has received the order granting Ibrahim El-Zakzaky leave to travel to India for medical treatment.

“Consequently, the Service is liaising with relevant stakeholders to ensure compliance. Conformity with the order is in line with the Service’s avowed commitment to the Rule of Law inherent in a democracy,” the spokesman said in a statement.

The permission was granted by a High Court in Kaduna on Monday.

The permission was granted following an application to that effect by his counsel, Mr. Femi Falana.

The court, presided over by Dairus Khobo, however gave the condition that El-Zakzaky must be accompanied by officials of the Kaduna State government and the Department of State Services, DSS.

El-Zakzaky has been in detention since 2015 when his group clashed with the military in Kaduna.

Protests by members of his group, had at different times, led to loss of lives and properties.

The Federal Government has consequently declared the group proscribed as it labeled it a terrorist group.

The declaration by the government followed a court order to that effect.

The group is already challenging the proscription in court.
