El-Zakzaky trial: Police beef up security in Kaduna, warn against protests

The Kaduna State Police Command on Sunday issued a stern warning against any form of protests, processions and demonstrations in the state.

The warning was issued ahead of the Monday High Court ruling on the application filed by Islamic Movement in Nigeria leader, Ibrahim Elzakzaky, seeking for bail to enable him travel to India for medical treatment.

IMN is otherwise referred to as Shi’ite.

El-Zakzaky has been detained since 2015 following the clash between his group and the military.

The continued detention of the Shi’ite leader has led to several protests by his followers resulting in killings and destruction of properties.

In a press statement issued on Sunday, the Kaduna Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Yakubu Sabo, the police said it would deal decisively with anyone found violating the ban on protests, processions and demonstrations of any kind.

He disclosed that there would be massive deployment of personnel to forestall any violation of the ban.

The police urged the public to go about their normal businessess, but report suspicious persons promptly to avert security breach.

The statement reads in part: “Members of the public should note that the ban on all forms of processions and demonstrations in Kaduna State is still in force.

“In view of the court trial of Malam Ibrahim El-Zakzaky on Monday August 5th, the peace-loving and law-abiding people of Kaduna State are to note that adequate security has been put in place for a hitch-free court appearance.

“Therefore, members of the public are advised to remain calm and not to be apprehensive where they observe unusual number of security personnel in town.”

“The Command wishes to notify the general public to exercise more security consciousness as they go about their lawful businesses,” the statement reads further.

“The Command uses this medium to call on the general public to report suspicious activities or persons around them to the nearest security agency.

“In this regard, Police Emergency Numbers: 07039675856 and 08075391105 can be reached in case of any distress or emergency,” the police stated.
