Ekiti: My removal as Speaker bizarre -Oluwawole

Kolawole Oluwawole, who was removed as the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly on Thursday has reacted, describing the development as bizarre.

In a statement released by his spokesman, Gbadamosi Oluwawole, on Thursday, he said what happened was an illegality which could not hold.

He said he was still in charge.

Faulting the reconvening, he said he retained the power to reconvene the House after its last adjournment and he had not done so.

He berated the police over the alleged role they played in his removal.

The statement reads:  His words: “What was done today by some members of the House aided by armed security men is a rape on democracy and a descent to lowest level of lawlessness and illegality.

“This is bizarre! In a democracy? This is the height of illegality and it can never stand. As the Speaker of the House, I presided over the last adjournment of the House, which was carried out according to laws and laid down rules.

“I retain the power to reconvene the House and I have not done that yet. How then can some people say the House sat? This is totally illegal. The role of the police in this siege is clear.

“As I speak, I have not reconvened the State House of Assembly after it adjourned.”

Oluwawole and his deputy, Sina Animashaun, were removed on Thursday.

Adeniran Alagbada and Segun Adewunmi have since been sworn in as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively.
