The governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has joined the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
His decision was announced days after he resigned from the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Recall that he was disqualified from contesting the APC primary for Edo governorship election over the allegation that his certificate was “defective.”
The screening was conducted with Adams Oshiomhole as the national chairman of the APC.
Obaseki’s movement to PDP was announced on Friday on the Twitter handle of the party.
The tweet reads: “Breaking News! The governor of Edo State, H.E. @GovernorObaseki has defected to our great Party, the @OfficialPDPNig. The declaration was made this afternoon at the state Secretariat of our party in Benin city, Edo State. Power to the people. #EdoIsPDP.”
Obaseki also confirmed the movement on his Twitter handle saying he joined the PDP to “advance my ambition to seek re-election as Governor of Edo State.”
He added: “I, as always, remain committed to engendering good governance and sustainable development of our dear state.”
In a further development, the PDP granted Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shuaibu, who also joined PDP, the waiver to contest the primary for the governorship election.
The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Kola Ologbodiyan, announced the waiver in a tweet:
“@OfficialPDPNig grants waiver for @GovernorObaseki to enable him contest the gubernatorial primary of our great party. Party has also approved waiver for his deputy, Philip Shuaibu.”
