The Gombe Criminal Justice Committee on Friday released 38 prison inmates, having overstayed in the prisons.

Most of the inmates were awaiting trials and had overstayed in the prisons.

They were released on health ground and good conduct.

Speaking to some of the freed inmates, the Committee Chairman, Mr Hakeela Heman, urged them to be law-abiding, as they regained their freedom and he used the forum to congratulate them.

He said the committee had reviewed cases of those awaiting trial within the provisions of the law and took appropriate decisions on the cases brought before them.

Heman commended the Federal Government’s decision to change the name of Nigerian Prison Service to Nigerian Correctional Service.

“I want to commend the Federal Government for changing Nigerian Prison Service to Nigerian Correctional Service. This will go a long way in reforming the inmates,’’ he said.

In his response, Controller of Prisons in Gombe, Ahmadu Adamu, said the prison was congested and posed a lot of challenges to the staff and inmates as well as the society.

He called on the committee to address the delay in dispensation of justice.

Speaking on behalf of the freed inmates, Mr Destiny Ele, assured the committee that they would be of good behaviour.
